Kelvington’s history

Kelvington takes its name from William Thomson, 1st Baron Kelvin, the scientist and inventor. The town sits in the parkland region of Saskatchewan, at the crossing of Highway 38 and Highway 49, and the CPR railway runs through it.

Over the years the town has become a service centre for the surrounding area. A hospital opened in 1969, and it was replaced by the new Kelvington and Area Hospital in June 2016, with a 45-bed long term care facility following in early 2017. The East Central Saskatchewan Association for the Rehabilitation of the Brain Injured also operates a rehabilitation facility in town, serving people within a hundred-mile radius.

Kelvington is ringed by lakes, and Fishing Lake Regional Park, Marean Lake and Greenwater Lake Provincial Park are all within about 40 kilometres. The town is also known for its hockey players, among them NHLers Barry Melrose, Joe Kocur and Wendel Clark.
